Prom season is upon us! What better time to bring back Friday Fashion Debate??
Prom fashion seems to have a longer shelf life than regular fashion. I’m not saying my prom dress from 10 years ago would work now but you can make some fashions work over a several year span. That doesn’t mean there aren’t certain styles that appear to be the top trend each year. We are going to touch on those specific ones today.
The number one trend this year in prom fashion is set to be the two piece dress. This isn’t a change from the last year really but it seems to still be forecasted as the most commonly seen prom trend. I really like this trend. I think it is young and fresh and allows you to show off a variety of styles with patterns, etc.
The second biggest trend projected for this year is wine shades. This typically refers to burgundy red or dark purples shades. These two color families are extremely flattering on most skin tones and a definite favorite in my book for dramatic formal attire.
Another trend we expect to see a lot of this year is high neck lines. It seems like the typical formal fashion a few years ago used to be extreme plunging necklines. It stepped away from that but kept a more normal v-shape neckline for a couple of years but this year we are seeing necklines that are very high. The exception is sometimes you will see a lower neckline but they are illusion styled where there may be lace, etc but there is actual fabric in the “open” space.
We also have another returning trend this year, florals. If we went back several years, florals were not big in formal wear. You would see them in beading and accents but definitely not full floral pattern skirts. I have to say, I absolutely adore this trend. Floral formals are so feminine and fun. The addition of florals in the formal world opened up the option to have so much color and drama in your prom look. This is a definite yes in my book and I hope this trend sticks around!
This is not to say that there aren’t a ton of other styles out there that are great prom looks. These are just a few of the trending looks for 2017. We would love for you to share some of your favorite prom styles with us or send a pic of your dress for this year!
To all of our 2017 Seniors who are nearing the end of their High School careers, we hope you have a wonderful time at prom and enjoy the rest of your Senior year!
I may have lost half of you before you even got past the title, so I will explain. This is not a post about corrective eyeglasses or your cute grandpa with reading glasses that sit on the edge of his nose. We are talking about Snapchat Spectacles because I am obsessed! The Spectacles are sunglasses that record video from the perspective of the wearer.
After launching our Snapchat account in March 2016, our followers grew rapidly! We had no idea if the start of that account would work well or if students would even care to follow what we were posting there but the feedback was wonderful!
Now that we know Snapchat is beneficial for us, I am determined to get a pair of Snapchat Spectacles.
Are you thinking “just go out and buy some then”? Well that’s the problem. Spectacles are being sold via vending machines that get dropped off at random locations across the country. There is a countdown page and once the new location is announced you better get there quickly because the lines get outrageous and they do eventually sell out!
Ok so how does this relate to Fashion? Well some people love the style of these but others say they are hideous.
They come in three different colors but only one style/shape. Personally, this particular shape wouldn’t be my first choice if I were buying everyday normal sunglasses. However, they could be much worse. I think consideration that they need to be slightly fashionable was put into the design of these but others disagree completely.
What do you think? Are the acceptable as a trendy fashion accessory or simply only for technology trends?
We all know New Years Eve is one of the best days of the year for fashion. Who doesn’t love to get ultra dressed up in your best glam attire and celebrate the New Year with friends and family? I know I do!
First and foremost, the number one most important part of your New Years outfit is SPARKLE! Sequins, shine and shimmer are all welcome textures in the perfect New Years look.
This is limited to the clothing either. Sparkle can be in your makeup, your nails, your accessories, or if you are feeling really fun then do it all!
Secondly, you usually go with something a bit more sleek and slim fitting for New Years. For our Christmas party looks, we talked about full skirts and a-line dresses but with this look you want to show off a bit more. This does
not mean you have to wear something super short or revealing. I love the idea of a sequin pant or a sparkly legging with a nice shirt and tailored blazer. Nothing about this looks says inappropriate but the lines are very sleek and clean.
Really though, if I am being honest, this is the one day of the year that limits sort of go out the window. Whatever your style is, start the New Year being the best you! The whole point of a New Year’s party is to remember the year we had and celebrate the one we are about to start and a celebration is about happiness and joy!
Cheers to 2017!
Tomorrow is Christmas Eve! What a fun time of year and a fun time for fashion! Today we are going to discuss the best trends for your Christmas party outfit.
Personally, I think the cutest outfits for Christmas parties are the ultra feminine and somewhat frilly pieces. A tulle skirt or an A-line flare dress with tights is an adorable look for any holiday gathering!
Maybe your Christmas gathering is a more casual event. In this case I love the idea of a plaid shirt and a fur vest. This look fits the season and takes the casual look of a plaid shirt and pumps it up just a notch by adding fur (of course I mean faux fur). 🙂
I still haven’t figured out the perfect way to add a stylish hat to this look, they just never seem to look right on me but I love the one pictured in the photo.
Show up to your party with either of these looks and you are going to rock your holiday outfit!

Merry Christmas & Happy Holiday to you all!!
I am going to be honest, I am writing this debate today for my own personal needs. I recently bought an adorable pair of black ankle boots and NONE of my jeans look good with them. I am aware the trend is to roll the jeans to the top of the boot as pictured, but these particular boots have a slant from the front to the back and I can not find a single way to roll my jeans to look good.
Just for my own curiosity, I tried just wearing my skinny jeans that were extra tight around the ankle without rolling and that looks bad as well. At this point I am tempted to give up and only wear them with tights and dresses but I felt like Friday Fashion Debate was the best place for my last chance at wearing them with jeans.
Maybe the problem is just the boots I chose. I looked at photo after photo and none of the ones I saw look like the ones I am discussing. So my instincts tell me to stick to a very specific type of ankle boot.
My second thought was that maybe it is the jeans I am wearing. I noticed a lot of the ones pictured are short and the roll is very small. I am slightly vertically challenged so my jeans always seem to be longer than I want but I don’t buy “short” jeans because then I can’t wear them with flats which is my go to shoe.
Help me out fashionistas! What are your suggestions??
We have a rare chill in the air today so I wanted to talk about sweaters, specifically men’s sweaters. I feel like this is one of those things that most men stay away from but when done right, it looks extremely stylish and can really amp up a man’s winter wardrobe.
All three of the above options are a definite yes in my book! The key to pulling off a stylist men’s sweater is fit though. You don’t want to go too over-sized or you might as well just throw on a big hoodie and call it a day. If you are going for a stylish upgrade, it has to fit well!
The things I do not like in this look is the overboard silly patterns. The example with the fox and tree stripe pattern is a definite NO in my book. Woodland animals should not be on a men’s sweater. The only exception to this is if you are attending an ugly Christmas sweater party! You should stick with classic patterns such as the example in the top three photos.
Another important thing to remember is this look is that the pants you pair with your sweater matter. If you are going with slacks that is fairly easy to do but if you choose jeans for a more casual look, you want the right jean. This does depend on the sweater though so there is no overall rule. Just make sure if you choose a lighter sweater color that you may want to go with a dark jean and vice versa. You can see in the examples at the top that the cream sweater is with a darker fade denim but the one with the pattern that has a dark base is paired with a slightly lighter jean.
Men, what are your favorite sweater looks? Or do hate them? Let me know!
I am just going to come right out and say it, I do not like velvet. To be quite honest, I couldn’t even think of one instance where I would wear it, in any piece of clothing. This puts me on the no side of the debate this week because according to several fashion experts, velvet is a definite must have item this season.
While searching for the hottest examples of this trending fabric I did see a few looks that I was not completely against. Although in reality, I think it is one of those things that I may stop and look at it but will more than likely not even take it to the dressing room and will end up walking away without even removing it from the rack for a better look. However, I will share with you photos of the two velvet items that caught my eye while searching because I do think they are feminine and pretty and the patterns are perfection!
My definite would not EVER wear item is velvet shoes. If I am looking for a winter fabric for my footwear, suede is my go to. I can not find one velvet shoot anywhere on Pinterest that appealed to me, but here are a few examples anyway. 🙂
Of course it doesn’t stop at shawls and shoes. We have velvet pants, velvet skirts, velvet dresses, velvet chokers, velvet tank tops, velvet button downs, velvet jumpers, and it keeps going on and on!
I am interested to see how many of you disagree with me on this one. I don’t feel like I have seen this trend out and about much yet but in reality it is staying in the high 70s and low 80s in this part of Florida so velvet may take a little longer to make it’s debut here.
As always, I welcome your opinions!
Happy Friday everyone!!
This week’s debate is about a fashion question I have asked myself for years! Are gold and silver jewelry ok to mix? I always had an issue with it and stayed away until I jumped on the Alex and Ani bandwagon. My husband bought me and adorable gold owl and I had a silver one already and a silver one I had ordered on the way. The point being, when you are just starting your Alex and Ani collection, if you have three you better wear all three or it doesn’t have that adorable stacked bracelet look. I have now gotten used to the gold and silver mix on my wrist but it is very subtle.
Well today, I read that the mix is actually considered one of the top Fashion Accessory trends for Fall 2016! To take it a step further, a lot of accessories come with mixed metals, no mixing on your part needed.
We see it a lot in bracelets because the stacked trend has continued to stick around and mixing metals gives a bit of added dimension and drama. However, this look can be included in any of your accessories which may include, necklaces, purse hardware, earrings, rings, etc.
How do you feel about mixed metals? Let us know your opinion on the matter!
This week’s debate is not about costumes. I do want to talk about Halloween attire though. Our office has decided to encourage costumes this year but not every office or school has that policy. For those that don’t there are fun ways to spice up your attire on Halloween without being fully in costume.
In my opinion, there is nothing wrong with a pair of spooky tights under a dress or spiderweb shoes with your usual daily attire. These are simple and subtle ways to bring your Halloween mood to school or work. Wanting a little more? Opt for a dress in a fun Halloween pattern like this bat dress!
If these ideas are still a bit more than you feel comfortable with, opt for a fun Halloween pin on your shirt, a Halloween necklace or a Halloween hair accessory.
All of these are adorable options to bring the holiday spirit in to your fashion choices on Monday.
Here at Leonard’s, I hope our employees take advantage of the opportunity to wear full costumes! We will share photos with you next week from the Leonard’s Halloween Spooktacular!
This week we are veering away from fashion a bit and talking about hair. We usually see a big shift in hair trends when it comes to changing up your look from Summer to Fall but each year it seems there is a specific shade that we see everywhere! This year, one of the biggest Fall hair trends is copper.
There are many variations on this hair color trend. The boldest version is full copper. This look is dramatic and fierce and definitely eye catching. It is also a fun way to get out of the “brunette or blonde” box that we seem to always try to fit ourselves in to. I am a big believer in red, all shades of it and this copper red is one of my favorite looks. Although, I have more of a vibrant burgundy red ombre, not copper but I would still say this copper red is something I would love to try one day.
The second copper option is copper color melt. The color melt trend shows no signs of going away at this point and this look fits right in with that trend while still experimenting with this fun unique color. The best way to do this look is with ultra dark brown roots that blend in to lighter copper shades throughout and the ends of the hair are completely copper. You can also do this same look with a more dramatic root by using a dark burgundy instead of pure brown. Doing this creates a bit of a wild vibrant look that is sure to turn heads and draw attention.
The more timid version of this look is a simple copper highlight. This can be done with blonde or brown hair. Copper highlights create dimension. These highlights look particularly good with curled hair because it extenuates the curls.
